How Do Identity Thieves Use
Your Information?
Once an identity theft
occurs, the thief will assume your identity to
commit fraud in ways not limited to the
following:
Contacting your
creditors and diverting mail to another address.
They then request additional or new cards be
sent to the new address and begin running up
charges. New credit card applications will
usually begin shortly after.
Opening up new
wireless phone accounts and other utilities in
your name.
Opening bank
accounts in your name to obtain checks which
will be used to obtain merchandise.
Purchasing
automobiles with your information.
Using your name
when receiving traffic violations or during an
arrest.
How Do You
Protect Yourself From Identity Theft
You can reduce
your risk of becoming a victim of identity theft
by following some simple guidelines:
Protect your
mailbox- Remove incoming mail immediately after
delivery. Consider a door dropbox. Use U.S.
Postal Service mail collection receptacles or
your local post office to mail sensitive items.
Protect your
debit and credit cards- Immediately sign new or
previously unsigned cards. Never share your card
or P.I.N. number with anyone for any reason. Do
not put your full account number on any document
sent by mail services.
Protect your
wallet/purse- Do not carry your social security
card with you. You should memorize your social
security card and never carry it on your person
or write it on any documents you carry.
Protect your
documents- Immediately shred receipts and
utility bills or any paperwork which may contain
personal information.
According to the
FTC, approximately 10 million Americans were
victims of identity theft in the past year
alone. Over five million Americans – or more
than half of all identity theft victims –
discovered they were victims by monitoring their
accounts.
This
means that more likely than not, it is up to you
to find out if you’re a victim of identity
theft.
